Celebrate Juneteenth at the Library! Enjoy Juneteenth-themed books, songs, crafts, and refreshments to commemorate this jubilant day of freedom in America's past, present, and future.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, celebrates the end of enslavement in the United States. On June 19, 1865, a long two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, and more than two months after the official end of the Civil War, Union General Gordon Granger traveled to Galveston, Texas, to deliver the news that all enslaved people were immediately set free. Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas in 1980 and a federal holiday in 2021. We hope you will celebrate Juneteenth with us at the Library!
